Let’s share feedback and tips for your Animations!

UPDATE 20/01/2018update

I created this new session “Your Animations” to give you a space to share your shots, exercises, animation test, cycles… YourAnimationsTitle_Base2.png

I receive a lot of emails and messages with your shots asking for feedback! I’m always happy to help (sometimes it could take some days but I try to find the time to answer to all of you) but … right now it’s a bit confusing ’cause I receive your emails (with your shot’s link) on my emails, facebook, youtube, twitter, linkedin….and can happen that I miss some of them! SO.. 😀 I thought to create this new category to gather all your shots and questions so that everything is more clear and organised and I’ll easily have access to them! 😉

You can use the comments below to share links to your animations or ask questions! In this way also the other people could give their feedback if they want or … help with some questions/topics! 😉 Hope this will make the “feedback process” more easy!

So, in general, your main problems cames from the poses, after that you will also have to adjust the spacing and smooth the curve, right now everything is too linear and there’re a lot of pops/jerks here and there! All this things create the mechanic feeling)!

Hope this helps, and remember to always start with the blocking and create good poses, spend time on this step, it’s super important!! 😉

hey there, well I followed your beginner tutorial “bouncing ball” and the result was way better than my old bouncing ball animation. But I don’t feel the natural flow in my one in contrast with yours. So I thought to share it here and have some feedback 🙂 Please have a look. Also I never did understand the use of graph editor before reading your post. 🙂 Here is the link- https://youtu.be/quMe6aRZybE

Hi! Congratulations on being the first one to use this feedback page! 😀 YOU WIN A………. a feedback….yeah…!! 😀 Actually your Bouncing Ball is really well done! I like it! Not much to say! It works 😉 In general is very cartoon, so maybe that’s why you don’t feel it enough natural, but I like the cartoon style so I wouldn’t change it! 😉 but just fyi: to make it more realistic you should reduce the exaggeration for the squash and stretch and the spacing (moving the ball more close to the contact pose in the frames after and before, and reducing the “slow down in the air” a bit) BUT……I just like it the way it is so…I wouldn’t change the cartoon style! 😉

Besides this: I added few little notes for the rotation, the latest rebounds and the stop (see picture added in the post up here, FEEDBACK #1)! Good job! (y)

After your feedback, now I am feeling more comfortable with my animation. Thank you.! One more question, “for the rotation of the ball, I did it manually. Is this the correct way to do it?”

IMO there’s no “good or bad way” to do something, just a good or bad result 😀 so, all my suggestions are to help those who have no idea how to reach a result (so I show my way to do it) 😉 Your bouncing ball is very very good, the rotation also is good, just in that particular range it seems to slow down too much, just check the curve! 😉

Hi! I saw ur walk cycle tutorial and I dont know what I’m doing wrong. I dont feel my character sexy haha I think its more like a robot or something and I dont want that 😦
Hope u can help me and can send u more of my work later.

Hiiii there, how are you? Well, I have tried to make a “run cycle” this time by watching your tut. And now am waiting for your the feedback. I feel so happy every time I watch my run-cycle although it’s not perfect. 😀 😛 Thanks for the awesome tutorial….

Hi Chiara! First, I want to Thank you for create your blog and share your knowledge with everyone, It’s really awesome and it’s helping me a lot!
I’m studying 3D in a school and we need to create a short film for our final project. There’s a scene on my Short that my character is going to throw a Pop corn basket on the camera. And for my happiness you made an exercise of it!
I made it following your tutorial, I found it so helpful and I couldn’t do it before.
I would be glad if you could have some time to check it and give me some feedback.

    Have a nice day.
    Thank you!

Hi! Your main problem are POSES! Create a blocking first and spend more time on the poses, POSES are the most important thing! She’s extremely robotic and there’s no life in her eyes, also her right hand it’s just “opened” it’s not not grabbing the ball. I made some poses reference for you, you can check them in the post up here FEEDBACK #10 😉

Thank you for your feedback. I am posting a revised version. Had issues with the brows and had difficulties sculpting a nice shape. As for the hair, I think I placed an octopus on it….

Hi! The expressions are much better! 👍 I like them!
You still miss the moving hold, if you watch my turn frame by frame, you can see what I mean, she must continues to move the entire body for some frames (chest, head, shoulders, eyes, eyebrows and mouth)
Also, you could try to add a little change in position for the chest during the turn, translating it a bit on the right and also a bit upwards, the movement should start on the breakdown pose and at the end… smooth the stop
Eyes dart: keep it on the same line in Y, and reduce the right translation, should be just a small adjustment but she keeps watching in the same point (it’s not suppose to me a change in look direction)
Hair animation: the movement is very nice, but yeah….it’s too much for the type of turn she does (would be justify if she would turn much more the head) maybe I also exaggerated a bit with the reference, so…reduce the movement but keep the timing that it works, just move much less the locks! 😉👍

Thank you again for your generous feedback. Here is a blocked run cycle (splined because the rig is doing some funky things while on step mode)

PS: I have not animated anything in years, but your site and feedback have been inspiring.!

Hi! Is better 🙂 but still needs some work! I added other few notes on “FEEDBACK #10”
In general, I would suggest you to stop this test for the moment and do some more simple and easier exercises (for example just create some still poses for a character in different attitude, so that you can learn the basic rules to create good poses and silhouettes, you can post them here and I’ll help you) or other simple exercise to practice with moving hold and settle (like a simple turn of a character or something very short) the throw exercise is not so easy to do, so don’t take this in the wrong way, but I always suggest to go step by step, starting from the basis 😉

Had a go at the throw exercise today. I would have done a few things differently, maybe a rig with foot roll….🤔.Lots of counter animation on the arm..etc. As always thanks.

Thanks for your suggestion and yes perhaps I’m not going step by step and thus not clearing the basics. But I’m thankful to you for suggesting me right direction. And please do tell me more for learning basics of animation like you told for poses and moving hold.
    So thanks again a lot!!!!😊😊😊

Here now I moved to the timing and spacing lesson and made bouncing ball animations based on their physical properties. Please give your feedback and the problem is with rotation. Do tell something to manage rotation with having squash and stretch in the ball.

Hi! Well done! They work pretty well! 😉 about your question: in the video you show the y tras curve and I imagine that you want to know why you have two keys with same Y tras value, well…actually there’s nothing you can do, your ball has the deformer pivot on the base of the ball, so it’s fine that on the frame before the contact (when the ball is stretched) you have the same y value. It’s ok. About the rotation: I usually animate the rotation before the squash&stretch, and once you add the squash, just adjust the rotation where needed in order to have the stretched pose aligned with the path of action

I know you must be busy these days but one thing (again) I would like to request you to give me some exercises based on timing and spacing ( like …..make a flour sack jump😊😊😊😊😊)….
And should I learn principles in order? Or just anyone first?…

    Like

    • i_want_to_be_an_animator says:

It’s not important the order of the principles (but timing and spacing is the more important for beginner) you can do any tipe of acting or action, but must be something easy so that you can learn it gradually, starting to manage the timing with few actions….in order to have the knowledge to do something more complex in a second time. I suggest you to do a blocking first so that is more easy for me to give feedback and easier for you to adjust it and understand it. Use the rig you want, the flour sack is ok (even if is not so easy as it could seems, you must know how to communicate feelings with that simple shape and also create good poses with it)

Hello, I’d like to hear your feedback about this walk cycle, it is my first try and it will be nice if you gave me some valuable critiques to improve it

Hi! before I can give you any feedback I suggest you to work much more on the poses and create a blocking of the cycle. Right now is too mechanic and the poses are unrealistic. Watch a good walk cycle as reference and use it for the main poses. (Richard williams walk cycle is a good reference to start with) 😉

I am very much a noob at animation, I’m using Harmony Toon Boom.

I’ve been trying to improve my drawing of characters before I started animating at all and a few weeks ago actually started animating. This is a short cartoon me and my brother are trying to make about a guy called Chris working nightshift in a cursed gas station and demonic customers turn up every night so he has to try and stop them.

It’s really hard to find feedback of any kind as I don’t know anyone that animates themselves so it would be a great help if you could give me some

Here is a walk cycle I’ve done as well with a rigged character

    Thanks 🙂

Hi! Sorry but this session is still on hold, I don’t have the time for feedback right now, I just had the time to check your anim and seems really nice, but I can’t provide you a detailed feedback sorry! I will let all of you know when I will be available again to follow your anims!

It contains a lot of task and time to create the best animation you have to focus on each and every small aspect of the visual like the way you turn the body and its poses while walking ,running, throwing and jumping.

Hi!!!! So here is my attempt to do a character ball animation. I followed along with your rhythm lesson and it really helped a lot. I tried to change the mood of the animation a bit. And also I liked your rigs so much I made some rigged balls for myself similar to yours (in Blender)…hope you don’t mind! This is my result. https://youtu.be/g8F4N40TBOY
